What Is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water is a sterile solution that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which acts as a preservative to stop bacteria from growing. The benzyl alcohol helps keep the water safe for multiple uses over time, typically up to 28 days.

This type of water is mainly used to dilute medications before they are injected into the body (not taken orally). Because the solution prevents bacterial growth, it can be used with more than one sterile needle, as long as sterile techniques are followed with each use.

What’s It Made Of?

Bacteriostatic water is made with just two simple ingredients:

• Sterile or distilled water

• 0.9% benzyl alcohol

Distilled water is purified by boiling, which removes contaminants and impurities — making it ideal for medical and lab use.

To create a 0.9% solution, the amount of benzyl alcohol added depends on the volume of water. For instance, 10 mL of sterile water would need 0.09 mL of benzyl alcohol.
